English spring

So here I am, half a year ago I did not really plan to go to great britain but things changed. Applied for a job and they invited me for an interview so here I am in Cambridge. A good reason to travel UK a bit and perhaps also Ireland and who knows maybe also back to Iceland.
For my first destination Cambridge I got a couchsurf and that was a great one. Thanks again to Valerie and Tom for their great hospitality. So a good start for my second time in Cambridge.

DSC_2655.jpg
The main area still looks exactly the same as it did 9 years ago. And like 2004 the weather is also kind of nice this time. Just a bit chilly and windy.

DSC_2653.jpg
A bit of rain and sun and lots of wind. Somehow it looks like the spring is behind the seasonal schedule in England. Outside of the center around the west center of the university it felt like autumn.

Like the places the prices for transport also stayed the same. Training from Cambridge to Manchester via London is quick but 44ยฃ expensive if you don’t buy the ticket in advance.
DSC_2769.jpg
Again, the english weather was nice to me. Streets were wet at the time I arrived but thats it. Around the docks, one of the modern parts of the city, you can enjoy the sun in the chilly evening. Here I recognized that brits must be immune against the cold! The men do wake boarding in a dock and the girls go out in the evening dress without a jacket. I was fine but just with my four layers on!

DSC_2807.jpg
Perhaps one of the few moments the weather was not really that nice to me. Otherwise I would have tried this giant carousel in the city center of manchester. Must be a great view on the Piccadilly square underneath.

DSC_2797.jpg
There is also a lovely old town near the center. Especially the part along the river is really nice. This picture shows a part in the middle of malls and as far as I know the house just looks far but its kind of new.

DSC_2794.jpg
Another major place in england is Liverpool just about an hour by bus so in a day trip distance. Thats how I did it and I liked it a lot more than manchester. The main buildings are all quite old or old and modernized like the train station of Liverpool.

DSC_2770.jpg
But the place I liked most was around the albert dock. A preserved harbour area with all the docks and warehouses from ancient times combined with the modern buildings from the bordering business district.

DSC_2792.jpg
Perhaps the most amazing piece I’ve found in Liverpool. A genetic manipulated sheep-banana. Done by a japanese artist to demonstrate against the genetic manipulated food.

DSC_2826.jpg
On the way to Scotland I also crossed this amazing place perhaps my favorite in England. Newcastle, based on the river Tyne with its many bridges over the river. One of those is the infamous millennium bridge for pedestrians. To let the big boats pass it can be rotated so the footpath would point at the sky.

DSC_2809.jpg
One of the finest streets of England is overlooked by this guy. Mr. Grey who was one of Britain’s prime ministers.

DSC_2833.jpg
Things are close together and after a 10m – not meter but miles in this case- hill walk along the river you will reach the sea. The area around Newcastle was also industrialized and there are many big business around marine engineering. If the factory is not visible the nearby working class houses will tell you that.

DSC_2849.jpg
At the end of the walk you end up in a place called Tynemouth which is the place where the Tyne runs into the sea. Somewhere on the other side would be Norway …

Medieval times are back – Sighisoara

Both of my rumanian friends told me to see Sighisoara so I had to come here. To get here is pretty easy, I thought. Actually, it is but it takes a wile. From Brasov its about 3.5h by train for something like 147km. Got one of those subway like trains full of gipsies. First part was quite fast but also bumpy but the middle part was sooooooo slow. Perhaps you would beat the train by bike. However, the scenery was once more quite nice and interesting. A lot of nature and cozy little towns along the rails.

clockTower.jpg
My final station was compared to the towns before quite big. But just a small part of it makes it to the place it is. The medieval old town which is also a unesco world heritage. The castle area is based once more on top of a hill in the middle of the town surrounded by many medieval houses.

DSC_1902.jpg
Inside of the city wall is another hill which is home to the church. From this hill you get a great view over the old town as well as new part of the city.

DSC_1910.jpg
But the more interesting place on that hill is the back part which is home of the cemetery. Awesome graves on such a great location. Quiet and peaceful. Perhaps Dracula is buried here, who knows.

The place is quite small and explored in a few hours but its really worth it to see. As Brasov also Sighisoara has a quite interesting surrounding. Surprisingly we also had a great night out. Didn’t expect that but the night was a really good one. Unfortunately I did the mistake again, got a train ticket ahead and left the place far too early without having the chance to say goodbye to the people form the night.

Wroclaw – Dresden – Prague – Cesky Krumlov

After all the familiar places the last few weeks it was time to move on. My first attempt was a total failure. Went back to Krakow and stayed for another 5 nights instead of one planned one! Anyway its a nice place to be especially with friends around.

People sent me to Wroclaw so I took a bus there. Unfortunately I got the shittiest seat which had less space for your legs than in any air plane I flew with! Luckily the bus ride only takes 3 hours where as the more comfortable train needs about 6 hours!
DSC_0974.JPG
I actually didn’t expect such a nice city. Just because of the fact that it is not very well known. There is tourism around but mainly polish and eastern european so all the signs are in polish language only. But its definitely worth to see it.

DSC_0995.JPG
Through the old town they have over 100 different dwarfs made of bronze. Very nice idea which keeps you busy looking for them ๐Ÿ™‚

This time I stayed with my plan to travel quicker so I left the place after two nights and moved 3 hours further to Dresden. After the train crossed the border it didn’t really feel like you entered Germany. Train stations were not only in german but also in polish. Another strange thing on the german site was that on every station some heavy armed police officer entered the train and had a look at the people. What were they looking for?
DSC_1100.JPG
Didn’t really know a lot about Dresden. In the past I heard different opinion about it. From boring place for living to beautiful old town and I definitely agree with the last one. Old town is not big but quite impressive.

DSC_1019.JPG
Also impressive was the reason why the police was checking the train on that day. It was the 13th of February and all about this and this. It’s basically about anti-fascists trying to block fascists from demonstrating and for that you need a shit load of officers to keep them apart from each other. But actually I didn’t see any of the fascists. The police had any kind of vehicle. From transporter to armored clearing tank, lightning truck to state of the art water cannons and so on ๐Ÿ™‚

There might be more to see in and around Dresden but I already left it after one night. For old town and the center it was far enough time for me. For the weekend I wanted to be in Prague to do some planing and things which had to be done. But it was just another place I’ve already been to in the past. The only thing to add is that Sir Toby’s Hostel is a great place to stay despite the fact that it is a bit far from the center.
Next place in the list was Cesky Krumlov in the south of Prague close to Linz. A very small but cozy medieval town which is on the list of unesco heritages.
DSC_1158.JPG
The most remarkable thing is for sure the beautiful castle on top of the local hill. The colourful castle tower is an outstanding landmark which can be seen from almost every place in town. Beside the castle this place has also a lovely medieval old town. You get also some great local food around this place ๐Ÿ™‚

From Oulu back to Helsinki

… so here we are. Didn’t stay in Lapland as you might think just forgot my blog, some how. Can happen. After my Lapland time I moved back to the south, I mean the southern part of Finland. Still cold there especially the time in Oulu. Down to -22ยฐC.

paperfactory.jpg
Oulu is know as technology city and is also home of some big paper factories. The steam coming out of their chimneys looks quite awesome one a freezing cold day.

damm.jpg
Ouru is just next to the sea and has also a big river delta which is used for a power plant. Quite a nice damn with an awesome water staircase for the fishes ๐Ÿ™‚

DSC_0566.JPG
Another major place in Finland is Tampere. The Manchester of Finland. It once was all about textile industry. A lots of brick buildings as well as a couple hydro plants.

DSC_0605.JPG
Another remarkable construction is the shot tower of Tampere. Didn’t know what a shot tower is till I googled this one. Its a place to produce the ammunition for shot guns. Looks awesome on freezing cold days if there is some ice around the tower.

DSC_0642.JPG
Turku is one of the oldest city in Finland. Like most of the major places in Scandinavia Turku is also based just next to sea. Best time of the year to visit it might be in summer. So you can enjoy a trip to a archipelago island.

DSC_0639.JPG
In the sea harbour of Turku you can find a marine museum which has some interesting objects. Like this four mast sailing boat.

DSC_0698.JPG
In reach of Turku you find Rauma another world heritage place. Its all about the historical center which consists of typical wooden 1 story houses. Thats how finish towns once looked like!

xmasshopping.jpg
I already spent some nights in Helsinki last year. Didn’t like this city and thought it would be the ugliest capital of all scandinavian countries. Till I went to Oslo … but thats another story. So this time it looked really nice. Liked it much more during winter time.

DSC_0714.JPG
Even if you can’t recognize all the snow in the center they had plenty. Hard job to get rid of all the snow.

I had a great time in Finland. My personal favorite is Tampere or Oulu. Really liked those two places. But after Tampere I had another great weekend in Helsinki together with a friend. Lapland is a perfect winter destination as well as Helsinki. The other places might be better in summer when you can head out into the nature or music festivals.

Belgium Trip II – Brugge

My next stop was Brugge in the north of Belgium. The old town of Brugge is protected by UNESCO world heritage. Its actually the biggest medieval town I’ve ever seen. Really cool city centre with many nice corners.

nightlyBridge.jpg
Night shot of one of the many canals in the heart of Brugge’s old town.

belfort.jpg
One of the main attraction in Brugge is the Belfort. A huge tower famous for its bell play. There over twenty bells in use and used to be over 40. Every hour a piece of music is played.

DSC_7852.JPG
This is the huge drive of the musical box. Works after the same principle as a toy musical box.

Everybody loving the medieval times or old towns should visit this place. You might spend your nights in the Baumhaushostel which is a great place to stay if you are looking for a budget Hostel.

Trip to the nearby Salt Mines of Wieliczka

One of the daytrips you can do from Krakow. Just an half an hour by minibus are the salt mines of Wieliczka. One of the biggest salt mine to its time and for that one of the first protected object through the UNESCO world heritage.

staircase down to the ground of the mine (60/130m)

Awesome staircase down to the Level one of the mine. In total there are nine levels, Level9 on 330m underneath the surface. Unfortunately no one would give me his mobile phone for letting it fall through the tiny gap ๐Ÿ˜€

salt figures working in the salt mine

Some parts of the visitor part. There all over some salt figures to show the people how life under the surface used to be.

evaluator back to the top

On the end of the trip you can take a lift back to the top of the mine. Luckily you do not have to walk all the way back.

Cool daytrip, should you once stay in Krakow a must do it.

Fortress Suomenlinna

Helsinki used to be the door to the east for sweden. To protect it against the russians the Suomenlinna was constructed on to an island close to Helsinki. It is a UNESCO world heritage and a must see sight if you are in Helsinki.

some parts of the fortress

There are plenty of small islands around Helsinki but only a few ways where a ship can go through. Suomenlinna is in the middel of the two main canals protecting them with its strong canons.

fort canons

These babies are all around the island ๐Ÿ™‚

people still live on the island

The island is served by a frequently running ferry. So there is a couple of families living on it. It is also used by the military.

such a fence will surround my property ... ๐Ÿ™‚

Due to the population on the island there is a church in the middle of the bigger one. It used to be a orthodox church where as the typical towers of such churches were destroyed after Finland became independent.

the first finnish submarine

This boat was once constructed in the Netherlands for Germany. Used as a test boat by the Germans and later on sold to the Finns. It was Finland’s first submarine and the only one existing. All others were destroyed after the war.

Anybody who licks old castles and forts has to see this island. Unfortunately were most of the museums closed. They are only opened during summer ๐Ÿ™
